Today I put some 6mm heatshrink padding over the jaws of my bench alligator clips and one pair of my needle nose pliers.

To what purpose?
So that the metal teeth don’t scratch whatever it is I stick in there for holding (usually circuit boards).

To be fair, it could have been for insulation of some kind; and I’ve since discovered that the bright yellow heatshrink material makes the pointy bits stand out, highlighting them to some degree.
