Mum is roasting a chicken and my Air Quality Meter started alarming. The oven in the kitchen is smoking too much! This thing is super sensitive, it’s great, I’m glad I got it! The other day while I was soldering with the window closed it started alarming too. It’s good to have something reminding you about air quality.

In this video I mod a pair of resistor boxes by installing banana plug terminals in place of the lug terminals they came with and then I give a quick demo of them.
In the demo we connect them in both series and parallel and then measure their resistance with my Fluke multimeter.
I mention this video from Dave Jones on the EEVblog: EEVblog #1020 – Is A $7 LCR / Component Tester Any Good? which is where I found out about the RS-201W resistor box which he has. I searched on eBay for RS-201W but what I found for over US$1,000 (inc shipping) was way too expensive: IET Labs RS-201W Wide Range Precision Resistance Substituter.

Thanks to my mate @edk from IRC I learned of the compose key. I configured my KDE Plasma desktop to use Right Alt as my compose key in System Settings -> Input Devices -> Keyboard -> Advanced. Then I updated the firmware and deployed a .XCompose file that I generated, and now I have a symbol keyboard on my Debian Linux workstation!
My new 10-way powerboard arrived today and I wired it into the booth along with a PowerShield Defender 1200 UPS battery which I had spare.
Then I had two spare powerboards so I installed one of them (with an RCD Safety Switch) behind the bench. You can see it in the photo below. The thing you can see plugged in on the top is my Watt Meter, it reports on current draw and power usage.
I am pretty happy with today’s handiwork.

In this video I take a look at how to use all of the features of my new Fluke 17B+ Digital Multimeter.
This is the inaugural demo video. We now do an ‘unboxing’ and a ‘demo’ separately. In the demo videos we try to take a close look at each feature of a product. Whereas with the unboxing we just make a record of the unboxing experience and take a cursory look at a few features.

We were lead astray by the slide for the current test which indicates the wrong terminal for the current measurement! I got these slides from Fluke in the 15B/17B/18B | Quick reference guide on the Manuals+resources tab on their documentation for the Fluke 17B+ Digital Multimeter. So it is pretty disappointing that the official Fluke documentation led me astray like that! But we figured it out in the end so all is well that ends well.
Errata: at around the 24 minute mark I try to introduce a load across my 9 V AC input voltage but I don’t correctly wire it in. So when I think I’m testing with a load attached there is in fact no load attached.
