In this video I do the fifth Maxitronix 10in1 Electronic Project Lab project: 1-Transistor Radio.

This is the second radio circuit and just like the previous radio circuit I wasn’t able to make this one work either! But at least this time I did get some static noise out of the circuit, which was better than the “nothing” which I got out of the previous circuit.

Also, I did learn how to setup a frequency measurement on my oscilloscope: Measure -> Add -> Freq. Easy peasy! :)

This experiment is a little disappointing, I couldn’t make it work in the end.

But I did learn not to leave my coffee cup on my project mat because it interferes with the thermal cam!

Man I had a lot of trouble figuring out what these things are called. I can tell you that they are not called F-Type, BNC, SMA, N-Type, or PL-259 connectors. In the I end I asked about this and learned these connectors are called Belling-Lee connectors, also known as IEC 169-2 Female/Male. But if you search for “IEC connector” (which these things are apparently sometimes called) you will only find the power adapters, not these aerial connectors.

New computer ‘trail’

I have built a new computer ‘trail‘ out of my old workstation ‘tradition‘. I was able to do this because I migrated the VirtualBox VMs that were running on ‘tradition’ over to QEMU/KVM VMs now running on ‘lore‘.

My new computer ‘trail’ is setup as the recording workstation for the “booth” in my studio. This is good because now I can record at 4K in the booth!

I don’t use Windows much these days but this new studio workstation runs Windows 11 Pro. I haven’t used software RAID on Windows before but for this workstation I setup a RAID1 mirror using 2x 2TB NVMe drives. I was able to configure the block size for the NTFS file system so I picked 2MB (which was the maximum) as this RAID array will only be for storing video recordings (which are huge files).

Passing myself off as respectable

There’s been a little bit of spring cleaning around here today!

I’m trying to get my house in order so I can pass myself off as respectable when I start promoting my new show In The Lab With Jay Jay in earnest.

To that end I have reviewed the look and feel of my wiki. It no longer has that black, green, and orange monospaced font vibe going on, but now uses the relatively unoffensive default theme.

It’s not using the latest Vector theme, but rather the legacy one. This was deliberate because I have a lot of big tables in my wiki (such as on my computers and shopping pages) and the legacy theme plays nicer with those.

I’ve also been tweaking the website for my show, including an updated about page.

The blog, the wiki, and the show also now all use my new favicon which is my take on the Hacker Emblem:
