This is an old video I found while tidying up my files today. I recorded this back in September 2023, around about a year ago. Figured I might as well publish it on Elliot’s Extras.

In this video I unbox my Yum Cha M6013 Capacitance Meter and my Yum Cha MESR-100 ESR Meter. Then I attach some banana plugs to one of my Yum Cha Probe Tweezers.

This is the inaugural Mini Project! I introduced the Mini Projects recently. They are developed and published by Silicon Chip magazine, and sponsored by Jaycar Electronics (which is an Austrlaian electronics store, similar to Radio Shack in the USA, hopefully it doesn’t end up suffering the same fate.)

In this project, codenamed JMP001, we develop a USB keyboard which can send interesting and unusual symbols (which aren’t usually available on a keyboard) to a Windows computer using the alt-codes that it supports in a typical codepage.

For this first Mini Project I felt it was important to actually buy my components from Jaycar which I did for roughly eighty Australian dollary doos. Approximately US$50. The parts I ordered were these:

Belatedly I did also search for rubber feet.

There was quite a lot that went into the production of this video, and we accumulated a lot of links. Those are here:

In the end this first project was relatively successful, and we did get it to work fairly well on one of my Windows computers. As for the rest you can find out for youself in the video!

Getting info about recent core dump (on Debian)

This is a note for Future John about how to report a recent coredump (with debugging symbols) on Debian:

DEBUGINFOD_URLS="https://debuginfod.debian.net" coredumpctl gdb

Then bt is a magical gdb command to run to give you the call stack of the thread which… failed?

Extra Content #13: Failing to Attach Banana Plugs to Microphone Cables | In The Lab With Jay Jay

In this video I try to attach some banana plugs to my microphone cables, but I do not succeed.

I tried to find some examples of how to do this properly on YouTube, but I didn’t find much: how to assemble banana plugs

I did find a video of a guy who essentially just explained all the problems I ran into: Banana Plugs & Binding Posts

And this one over here confiremed: How to fit a Banana Plug

In this video I unbox the OULLX NSS-681HDMI-RJ45 Cable Tester from AliExpress and compare it with the Ampcom Automatic Network Cable Tester also from AliExpress.

Note that the Ampcom is advertised as the ANENG M469D on AliExpress, but that’s not actually what you get. The Ampcom model that you do get seems to work well enough, but I would recommend the OULLX NSS-681HDMI-RJ45 because it’s cheaper and can do HDMI in addition to Ethernet.

In this video I clean, test, and file a bunch of resistors and ceramic capacitors.

During this video I mention the Peak Atlas test instruments. I don’t own these yet, but they are on my wishlist!

In this video I unbox an Ampcom Automatic Network Cable Tester from AliExpress. It was a bit confusing because the AliExpress page says this is an ANENG M469D. But actually it’s not. It’s an Ampcom Automatic Network Cable Tester, which is a similar bit of kit. In the video I test this equipment with both a normal patch cable and a crossover cable and it seems to work okay, so for five bucks I’m a happy customer.
