If you hold shift when you boot your Mac it will boot in safe mode. When you’re logging in hold shift and your apps that normally open at start-up won’t be opened automatically.

PVC insulated cables
So I asked about cleaning cables over here and apparently the material on the outside of a typical cable is PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), AKA “vinyl”. The jury is still out on what the best cleaner is for vinyl, but options include WD40, IPA, and metho (ethanol). I was worried that such solvents might damage PVC around electrical cables, but apparently it won’t.
What is this cable called?
If you open up a disc drive you are liable to see cables such as the one pictured below. I’d like to know what these cables are called and if it’s possible to order them. I would want them in different widths and lengths. What should I search for?

The IDE adapter that I have is this one, but it reports all disks as damaged (and they’re not). I think maybe it’s too new for the drives maybe? Speaking a newer version of the ATA protocol? I have no idea really.
