My first Xbox wheel arrived today:
I tested it with a couple of games:
Works great! Gonna clean in up and package it for sale.

Backing up MySQL views
So my `mysqldump` script wasn’t backing up views. I found a good solution using information_schema on Stack Overflow: Backing Up Views with Mysql Dump.

Man, I walked through the valley of the shadow of doubt with this one.
What is pictured is an after-market Xbox controller I picked up recently. While I was doing the intake I found its plastic was a bit “sticky” so I gave the controller a bit of a clean, but it started tearing gunk off the plastic, and it all basically went to shit.
I scrubbed and scrubbed and hit it with isopropyl and vinegar and ethanol (ethanol seemed to work best) but ultimately I popped the whole thing open and washed the parts with soap, bicarb soda, and boiling water.
I managed to salvage the controller in the end, but there are still some stains in the slots for the memory cartridge as you can see in the second photo below (for a while there the whole thing looked like that!).
I’m gonna have another go at those stains when my Goo Gone arrives, and maybe give it another hit with the ethanol too.
For a while there I was pretty sure this one was destined for the scrap heap. But after taking it to bits and scrubbing it I put it all back together, and not only did I have no screws left over, all the buttons continued to work too!
Networking
I have 50 computers (with IP addresses). 26 of them are on-prem virtual machines, 12 of them are AWS EC2 instances, 4 of them are laptops, 2 are Raspberry Pis, 1 is a WiFi router, and the last 5 are towers, being workstations/servers connected to a KVM of some type.
I guess I have some other things with IP addresses too, like a few smartphones, an iPod touch, my Rigol scope which has Ethernet support, and my Chumby and various power supplies which have WiFi support.
I had a situation the other day where I couldn’t remember what one of my computers was for or did…
John’s lab
Updated the photos of my lab, there’s some new equipment.

VGA gender changer
So I needed a female to female gender changer so I could convert a male VGA plug to female, and while I was there I figured I might as well get 2 pieces of each and have the full set, but I did feel a little bit silly placing an order for a male to female gender changer… I don’t understand why they are even on the market.
Make: Design for CNC
Today I’m reading my copy of Make: Design for CNC. I don’t have access to a CNC router but I’d like to learn a little about what’s possible.
Custom Cable Creator
I found this Custom Cable Creator. Pretty awesome! You can pick from a very wide variety of plugs and sockets and custom make a cable, then order it! Not sure what prices are like, I suspect high, especially for low volume.
