Broadband: Dodo nbn
These are some notes for Future John.
I believe our current nbn connection is FTTC (fiber to the curb). Our nbn plan with Dodo is the “nbn 100” plan which is AU$85/mo for 95Mbps down.
They are offering a “fiber upgrade” which will presumably be FTTP (fiber to the premises). Once that is connected we are eligible for the “Home Superfast” plan which is AU$110/mo for 200Mbps down.

More chromium woes
So it seems that my trouble with chromium is not over. Today a new twist. Thank God I still have Firefox! I will try updating and rebooting again, but can’t do that at the moment.

The Internet Con
Today I was referred to Cory Doctorow‘s new book: The Internet Con: How To Seize the Means of Computation. Apparently it’s basically just about the idea that web services should interoperate. I’m not going to read this one, but you might?
Linux web sites
Just some notes about web pages I was reading today.
- Linux Journal
- Linux Foundation
- Linux Foundation DokuWiki site
- Linux Standard Base (LSB)
- The Linux Kernel Archives
- LANs/ethernet-faq
- Ethernet Books by Charles Spurgeon and Joann Zimmerman
- IP Sysctl
- The Linux Kernel Module Programming Guide (for Hello, World Linux kernel; there’s also some good stuff on YouTube)
Linux Journal articles
I had a read of a few Linux Journal articles today. Easy reads that give you a high level view of what’s available:
- File Sharing on Linux Using NFS and Samba
- Combining Configurable Button Widgets With Kwin’s Shortcuts to Transform Your KDE Experience
- How to Monitor Your System with Zabbix
- Navigating the Linux Textscape using Vim and Emacs
- Locating Leviathan Files in Linux
- How to Configure Postfix Mail Server on Debian
QUIC Loss Detection and Congestion Control
This came up in my feed today: QUIC Loss Detection and Congestion Control. I wish I had time to read it closely! It’s about how they re-implement the TCP bits and pieces (such as congestion control) atop UDP.
Netfilter and iptables
This evening I read the iptables man page and Linux iptables Pocket Reference from cover-to-cover; my notes are here: Netfilter.
I think at this point I am ready to use iptables in anger for the first time in a long time, and the first time ever on a router.
However, before I take that on, I’m going to have a quick diversion into the following books, and then sleep, and I will do my iptables programming when I wake up tomorrow.
I’m on Patreon now
I suppose it’s a poorly kept secret that now I’m live on Patreon. My Patreon page is here: https://www.patreon.com/JohnElliotV
I would like to stress that I do my blog and my YouTube channel for love and I do *not* expect anyone to send money, so please don’t feel pressured to do so. <3
If you have any thoughts on the Patreon page or how my YouTube channel is configured I would be happy to hear from you, particularly if you have suggestions about how to improve things.
Adrian Black goes PRO
In my feed today a note from Adrian Black from Adrian’s Digital Basement that he was retiring from his infosec job and going full-time content creator for his YouTube channels. His announcement is here. It’s fun because I managed to be the first person to wish him luck and my name was in the credits because I now support him on Patreon! You can see the proof in the screenshot below! :)
