Silly Job Title: Spark Slinger. I am the Spark Slinger!
In this video we continue to work our way through Learning the Art of Electronics. In this video we finish 1L Lab: DC Circuits by learning how to use our oscilloscope and function generator.
We use the Rigol MSO5074 Mixed Signal Oscilloscope as our oscilloscope and we use the UNI-T UTG962E Signal Generator as our function generator.
Thanks very much for watching! And please remember to hit like and subscribe! :)
p.s. today I added slinger to my spell check.

Logic Analyzer with 1GHz Sampling Rate
Today I was pleased to discover this: DreamSourceLab DSLogic U3Pro32 USB-Based Logic Analyzer with 1GHz Sampling Rate, 2Gbits Memory, USB 3.0 Interface, 32 Channels.
There are some notes from the manufacturer over here: DSLogic Series USB-based Logic Analyzer.
It’s a logic analyzer which can operate at 1GHz that’s within my price range. I’m not rushing off to buy this thing, but it is certainly on my list.
The only other thing I have seen that compares to this logic analyzer is this RIGOL DS70304/DS70504– Digital Oscilloscope 3GHz/5GHz 4 Channel 20GSa/s 2Gpts 1000000 wfms/s which is roughly two orders of magnitude more expensive.
Plug your RSA into your MSO
Over here you can see how to plug your Rigol Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer (RSA) into your Mixed Signal Oscilloscope (MSO).
Pico Oscilloscope Range
I was searching for oscilloscope application notes and ended up finding the Pico Oscilloscope Range. If I was in the market for a PC based scope (I’m not) then I’d probably check these out. There’s some cool equipment there!
(Note: my MSO5074 scope has 8-bit vertical resolution, which is fairly standard, but if I ever find myself needing higher vertical resolution I will check out the
PicoScope® 4000 Series high resolution oscilloscopes.)
While checking out the Pico Tech site I found some other interesting articles:
- What to look for when choosing an oscilloscope
- Debugging an I²C bus with a PicoScope mixed-signal oscilloscope
- Fast Fourier Transforms explained
- Measuring the frequency response of a loudspeaker
- Colossus: we connect a PicoScope to the world’s first computer
And I also found Common Oscilloscope Applications.
XYZs of Oscilloscopes
I discovered this: XYZs of Oscilloscopes.
Quote for the day: oscilloscope is voltmeter
Over on The difference between a mixed-domain oscilloscope and a mixed-signal oscilloscope:
“An oscilloscope is essentially a sensitive auto-ranging voltmeter.”
